Birds of a Feather

Like a black bird of prey
You fly through my mind
Not pausing in flight, never landing,
You must carry a message too terrible to tell.

I can’t bear to look at you
Not even for a second
I only see where you have been
Where your wingbeats have stained the sky.

One day, seemingly by accident,
I notice you watching and I don’t look away.
And I knew: you’re lonely too.
Shall we meet by the river, or in my dreams?
