Birds of a Feather-two

Like a dark bird of prey
You flew through my mind
Never pausing or landing, clearly
Carrying a message too terrible to tell.

I couldn’t bear to look at you
So, I only saw where you had been
Where your wingbeats
Had stained the sky.

When I was finally able to stand still
Like a statue in a city park
You landed on my shoulder
Warming a part of me that had grown cold.

And then we both understood
That fear, remorse, regret, emptiness
Are just the loneliness of being
Bringing us together to begin anew.
