Where Should I Stand?

Can I find the right place between
Earth’s mantle and hillsides of aspen
Waving as one in sun and wind,
To join in as a human being?

Can I find the right rest stop
Between a wind chime’s melody
And the floating by of an old memory,
To notice that I am alive?

Between inbreath and outbreath,
Chest swelling like a spinnaker full of wind,
The surface of the bay like burnished copper,
Is the way ahead not completely open?

We’re finding out what it’s like to be governed
By someone who has never known friendship
Who has never wondered how another feels
Whose heart has never been moved to wonder.

Noticing that I have no effect and never will
On the global indifference inflicting such pain,
Why do I keep hoping that the heartless
Will somehow discover that they have a heart?

Can I not now learn where I belong
Taking my place among those who are kind
Where good deeds and caring thoughts connect us
Within the only world that is truly alive?
