Balancing Act

It’s a hard lesson to learn:
That in this hall of mirrors
We’re spending a lot of time, trying
To place the one who is looking back.

Most of our efforts are not in unison with this world.
How could they be?
If that was how our lives were unfolding
Our world would be a happier place by now.

I’m not saying that feeling good
Feeling appreciated and fulfilled,
Is something to avoid, lest our hopes
Collapse and we are once again deceived.

I’m saying that there is another way
Where our aspirations, rising up
Like mist from the sea,
Embrace gratitude for the beckoning fields.

We can practice dreaming another dream
Not the one where we assume control
Only to notice once again
That we have nowhere to go.

Like a spring welling up
In the dip of land surrounding it
We must join with our neighbors
Before we can flow together back to the sea.
