Weariness

The weariness, and worse,
Of living in
An unbalanced mind
My heart afraid to look

How can a heart be free
How can truth survive
On a diet of
lies and counter-lies?

It certainly doesn’t help
That I have come down with COVID
But that isn’t
My root ailment

When pure acts of goodness
Are in hiding
I stumble along uncertain
Through the light

Then an email from Bernie
Who is continuing to
Talk to people around the country
Honestly and directly

And I am reminded
That thoughts and actions matter
Good intentions matter,
Now more than ever.

May enough of us listen, remembering
How we once thirsted for the truth
Like a deer at the edge of the forest
Before we forget how that feels.
